Israel deployed American-made 900 kg bombs in the airstrike that killed top Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, according to a report by Reuters, citing a US senator. The United States, a key ally and major arms supplier to Israel, has provided significant military aid, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Mark Kelly, chair of the Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee, revealed that the bombs used were 2,000-lb (900-kg) Mark 84 series, commonly known as bunker-busters. “That 2,000-pound bomb, a Mark 84 series bomb, was used to take out Nasrallah,” Kelly said, referring to precision-guided munitions equipped with JDAMs (Joint Direct Attack Munitions) for enhanced accuracy.

While the US has supplied Israel with weapons throughout the conflict, the White House stated that Israel did not inform them in advance about the airstrike targeting Nasrallah. President Joe Biden only learned of the operation once Israeli planes were airborne, according to The Guardian.

Intensified Strikes on Hezbollah

In recent days, Israel’s military operations in Lebanon have escalated, resulting in the deaths of seven senior Hezbollah commanders, including Nasrallah. Following the strike, Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of key figures such as Nabil Kaouk, deputy head of the group’s Central Council, and senior commander Ali Karaki.

Other Hezbollah commanders killed in the attacks include Ibrahim Akil, Ahmad Wehbe, Mohammad Surour, and Ibrahim Kobeissi. Israel’s ongoing strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have led to over 100 fatalities in a single day, with Lebanon’s health ministry reporting 105 killed and 359 wounded.
