At least 53 people, including five women and two children, were killed in overnight US airstrikes targeting Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the group’s Health Ministry reported. Over 100 others were wounded in one of the most significant escalations since the war in Gaza began in October 2023.

The US launched multiple airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the capital Sanaa and the stronghold province of Saada, around midnight on Sunday.

Casualty Toll Rises

According to the Houthi-run Health Ministry, the attacks killed at least 53 people and wounded over 100, as reported by Reuters.

Trump Warns of ‘Overwhelming Lethal Force’

President Donald Trump vowed to continue strikes against the Houthis, warning that if they persisted in attacking international ships in the Red Sea, they would face destruction “like nothing you have seen before.”

US Seeks to Cripple Houthi Capabilities

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS News that the military action would continue until the Houthis “no longer have the capability” to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea.

Houthi Attacks on International Shipping

The Houthis have targeted global shipping routes, claiming to act in solidarity with Gaza. According to Rubio, they have attacked US Navy forces 174 times and commercial vessels 145 times using guided missiles and drones.

The Houthis’ political wing declared they would “meet escalation with escalation.” On Sunday, they claimed to have targeted the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group with missiles and drones.

Houthi Counterattack Fails

The Associated Press reported that the Houthis launched 11 drones and at least one missile in retaliation. US fighter jets intercepted ten drones, while a Navy F/A-18 took down another. The missile landed in the sea, causing no damage.

Iran Denies Involvement

While the Trump administration warned Iran it would be held accountable for Houthi attacks, Tehran denied any role and accused Washington of overstepping its bounds in the region.

The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for further escalation.
