Miscreants attack BSF constable on India-Bangladesh Border

NEW DELHI: On Monday, the Border Security Force (BSF) reported a distressing incident involving the assault of one of its constables stationed at the India-Bangladesh border. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by BSF personnel in safeguarding the nation’s borders.

Incident Details:

At approximately 1:30 PM, Constable Bhole, assigned to operate the fence gate, encountered a large group of Bangladeshi individuals illegally crossing the International Border. The group gathered near the fencing gate with the intent to smuggle sugar into India.

In an official statement, the BSF detailed the escalation of the situation:

“At about 1330 hrs, a large group of Bangladeshi miscreants crossed over the International Border illegally and gathered near the fencing gate with the intention of smuggling sugar. Further, they started hurling abusive language and instigated the BSF Constable on duty with provocative language and vulgar gestures.”

The miscreants’ aggressive behavior quickly escalated. They began to verbally abuse and make provocative gestures toward Constable Bhole. Subsequently, they physically assaulted him with bamboo sticks and iron rods, attempting to drag him towards the Bangladesh side. During the scuffle, they seized his weapon and radio set. Despite the severe assault, Constable Bhole managed to escape but sustained serious injuries.

Aftermath and Response:

Following the attack, the BSF promptly convened a commandant-level flag meeting with counterparts from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). During this meeting, the BSF lodged a formal protest against the incident. The BGB returned the seized weapon and radio set to the BSF.

This incident underscores the perilous conditions under which BSF personnel operate. The border areas are often hotspots for illegal activities, including smuggling, which pose significant risks to the security forces. The BSF’s swift response and the formal protest lodged with the BGB demonstrate the seriousness of the situation and the need for enhanced cooperation between border security forces of both countries.
