Meet Suman Kumari: BSF’s Trailblazing Woman Sniper
In a remarkable milestone for gender equality in the armed forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) proudly welcomes its first female sniper, Sub-Inspector Suman Kumari. Completing an arduous eight-week sniper course at the Central School of Weapons and Tactics (CSWT) in Indore, Suman has not only shattered glass ceilings but has also achieved the prestigious ‘instructor grade’ status.
Amidst a cohort of 56 men, Suman stood as the sole female participant in the rigorous sniper course, considered one of the toughest trainings in the force, second only to commando training. Her journey to becoming a sniper was motivated by a desire to counter the looming threat of sniper attacks emanating from across the border, a threat she encountered while commanding a platoon in Punjab.
Driven by a sense of duty and determination, Suman secured approval from her superiors to partake in the course. Her outstanding performance throughout the training earned her accolades from her instructors, with CSWT IG Bhaskar Singh Rawat affirming that she will serve as an inspiration for future female recruits.
