Sankaran Ramakrishnan, served in the Indian Police Service for 35 years in various positions in the State Government as well as in the Central Government. He also served at SVP National Police Academy at Hyderabad where he was responsible for the basic training of the Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. He also served in the Border Security Force (BSF) for five years including a three years tenure as the Director of Border Security Force Academy, Tekanpur. He was the chief of the Criminal investigation Department, the premier investigation wing of the State Police of West Bengal prior to his superannuation from service on 31st March, 2007.

Consequent to his retirement, he served with the State Government for two years and drafted the Police Act of the State and was involved in the revision of the Police Regulations. He also served the Prisons Department, where he revised the Jail Manual, drafted the Rules for the West Bengal Correctional Services Act and compiled a Training Manual for the Correctional department of West Bengal. He also set up the Regional Institute of Correctional Administration for training of the Correctional Officer in August, 2010. He was associated with the UNICEF as a Consultant for Police Training in 2014-15. He is the recipient of the DG BSF Commendation Medal, Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for distinguished Service.
